Cheat Sheet: Functional Treatment for Cognition

Hi SLPs!
With productivity demands, busy caseloads, full extracurricular lives, or kids interrupting your sleep at night (That’s me, currently!), you might notice that while you attempt to read the current research, it’s not always “sticking” for the moments you need to remember some of the key details. And let’s be honest, we don’t exactly have time to thumb through articles or textbooks trying to recall specific recommended guidelines for the population that benefits from a certain treatment.

Today, I’m sharing a simple “Cheat Sheet” that I use to recall evidence-based treatments that can be applied to meet functional goals in cognitive therapy. All of my treatment packets in my store include a simple Cheat Sheet that can be used to decide if a certain treatment would be appropriate for a patient, at a glance.

*Psst: Those of you that received a coupon via social media when this Series began: It expires on 11/2!

Functional Cognition: Book 4 – Spaced Retrieval

Hello SLPs (fellow medical / neuro lovers!) Today is the launch of the last book of the Functional Treatment for Everyday Cognition Series: Book 4 Spaced Retrieval! You’ve probably heard of this treatment technique — most popularly known for treatment in dementia, but did you know that it’s also recommended and supported in research as a memory treatment for neurogenic disorders (including stroke and TBI)?

If you’ve been following me for any amount of time, you know that I like to take more lengthy / complicated research and boil it down to small summaries that are useable, efficient, and of course FUNCTIONAL!  Book 4: Spaced Retrieval is in-line with my One-Click Series for Aphasia (VNeST, RET, SFA, CART, Script Training), so if you’ve enjoyed digesting those and using the easy handouts and documentation guides, read on! It’s hard to beat for only $5.

Psst: In case you missed it: The Functional Treatment for Everyday Cognition Series is part of my mission to bring affordable, understandable, efficient, evidence-based, useable, functional therapy materials to other SLPs.  If you have that deep-down knowledge/feeling that games and worksheets aren’t really cutting it for our neuro patients…. but aren’t sure what else to pass the time with in therapy, then this series if for you! Evidence tells us there are TONS of treatment methods we can apply to make a functional difference in our patients’ lives!

Functional Cognition: Book 2 Case Example

Hello SLP’s! It’s clear that the Functional Cognition Series has been resonating with people  — with our current knowledge, we need tools that are both evidence-based and easy to implement, Functional and fast to document, Practical, person-centered, and pleasing to the patient! If you haven’t yet, check out my newly-released Book 1: Goal Management Training or Book 2: Step by Step Activities,  and stay tuned for Book 3’s release next week (my biggest labor of love for this series!)

Today I’m sharing a Case Example that shows the power and benefit of using a protocol like Step by Step Instruction in therapy to meet real life goals.

Psst: In case you are just tuning in, this post is part of the Functional Treatment for Everyday Cognition Series: If you have that deep-down knowledge/feeling that games and worksheets aren’t really cutting it for our neuro patients…. but aren’t sure what else to pass the time with in therapy, then this series if for you! Functional Cognition: Book 2- Step By Step Activities

It’s another week and another opportunity to use functional, evidence-based treatments for cognition. That’s right, it’s launch day for the next part of Functional Treatment for Everyday Cognition Series.

Book 2: Step-by-Step Activities. I love this book! You know how watching the Food Network doesn’t really make you a great chef? Or watching Tour de France doesn’t make you a better biker? Well, the same is true for people with brain injury learning to resume everyday activities. We can’t do worksheets or games and hope that real-life skills are going to magically improve. We have to actually DO the skills they want to improve! Book 2: Step-By-Step Activities walks you through (ha, pun intended!) the ways you can apply this evidence-based framework to multiple real-life needs for adult neuro patients across settings.
