My Notepad

Have you ever treated someone in speech therapy whose interests were outside your comfort zone? For me, it’s the “Handy” people! As a self-proclaimed non-handy person, I barely know how to use the right terminology with someone who is into cars, hunting, or woodworking! I’ve talked about this before with my Car Maintenance Checklist!

Today is a topic I AM familiar with: Nail Salons! We have the privilege of using our knowledge and skills to apply to all sorts of different activities or ways to participate. But it shouldn’t matter if I enjoy a certain activity or not: If we are doing person-centered care, we are working within the activities that matter to each person we work with!

As part of the quest to have better resources that help us jump into person-centered approaches, I’ve found that checklists and therapy tasks organized by participation goal have made it much easier for me to structure questions, language treatment/conversations, cognitive goals, and relevant home programs.

For example:

Cooking

Med Management

Paying Bills

Managing a Schedule

Gardening

Using a Menu

Texting

Photos

Car Maintenance

Interviewing

Customer Service

Emailing

Managing Inventory

Tools

Practicing real life cognitive-communication skills is so much more meaningful than generic workbooks and board games!

Today I am sharing a (free printable!) Nail Salon + Speech Therapy.

You will “buy” this from the store–but it is $0! Use this to practice personally-relevant language your person may need to use, or practice the actual cognitive-communication skills in-context that someone may need to be able to do!
